The second quotation can be found on the base of the monument to the Scottish-American soldier dead of World War I. He describes the monument in great detail, including the fact that the soldier gazes upon Edinburgh Castle. He states that he carried the quotation in his wallet along with a photograph of Edinburgh Castle, but was not able to visit the monument until he relinquished his post as Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO.

Roosevelt inscribed this printed edition of his "Open Letter" sent to newspapers to Edward E. Swadener. Roosevelt argues that religious belief should not be a litmus test for candidates, claiming that political history shows people of certain faiths representing constituents with beliefs differing from their own. He dwells at length upon the anti-Catholic attacks on Taft during the last presidential election because of his supposed Catholic sympathies. He argues for tolerance.
