Written on half-sheet of paper. Contains a request from Thomas Fitzpatrick to the Secretary of War. Fitzpatrick writes, "I am a native of Ireland and a subject of Great Britain. My trade is house-painting, and I am not only out of employment, and unable to obtain any, but am absolutely destitute of means and money, without a shelter to stay in. I earnestly and respectfully ask that I may be permitted to leave the Confederate lines by land." Campbell, Assistant Confederate Secretary of War, endorses on verso. Captain [R. L.
