Discusses the application of the Marquis de Bouille to the Society of the Cincinnati. Also asks the Count d'Estaing for a list of the officers in the French Navy who are members of the Society; would like to use this list to to fill out diplomas for those members. Mentions that the "president General" [Washington] is too busy at the [Constitutional] Convention to perform this service. Finally, thanks the Count for submitting "Ideas on the Association of the Cincinnati" which the Count wrote in 1784 (see GLC02437.03027). Is not sure the Society will decide to adopt any of the recommendations…

Reports that General [Arthur] St. Clair arrested Lieutenant Colonel Forrest, possibly Thomas Forrest, on a complaint made by Eustis "for discharging a man belonging to the Regt. for three half Johannes." Apparently Forrest has failed to resign his post, and Eustis wants to know who will take charge in his stead. Says Forrest "continues speckulating."

Written and initialed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Writes, "I have received your letter enclosing a return of stores now at Verplancks and Stony Points. The deficiencies, as far as will complete each piece of ordnance to one hundred rounds of ball and twenty of grape shot, shall be sent down as soon as possible - also the carpenters tools as far as they can be supplied. I shall take an opportunity of reporting to the commander in chief the situation of those posts with respect to the guards of infantry who do duty there."

[John] Lamb's Regiment and find him ruptured which disqualifies him for field duty; but as the complaint existed previous to his inlistment, there is every reason to imagine he would (as many others have done) be sent out with the first levies next campaign in [case?] he was discharged, I can only recommend him as a proper subject to be transferred to the Corps of Invalids."

Reports that the society members agreed wholeheartedly but adds that he has had some trouble acquiring hard money because there is currently a scarcity of it in North Carolina. Also discusses his efforts to increase attendance at society meetings, and mentions the election of delegates to the next general meeting. Mentions "the probability that the Indians have done some mischief" in the area.

Offers Faesch his deepest sympathy and condolences, writing: "We suffer excessive misery at the loss of our dearest connections, but time sooth's and pours his balm into our wounds- We find we must, and that it is truly wise to submit patiently to events we can neither command or avert." Writes that the bearer of the letter, Captain Thomas Vose, will "make an establishment at the fort and block house farms for our mutual interests." Believes the people of Thomaston (Maine) will accept Captain Vose, and hopes that Fales and Vose will work well together. Has told Vose of his high esteem for Fales. Is unsure whether he will be able to visit the patent lands again during the present year. Asks Fales to present his compliments to the people generally in Thomaston.
