Notes that General Lee is expecting battle soon, and talks about the strength of Confederate forces. Also mentions his hopes for a Democratic victory in the north. to his parents, Thanks them for enclosing a note from his fiancee, Kate Corbin. The Western Governors have been on to see their states troops and exhort them to one last effort, as they say, here which must end the war. Genl. Lee looks for it to come any day now." Hopes war may end soon.

Sends her money to buy a new dress with, and discusses other family affairs.

There is a proposition now pending in Congress for an amendment" supplied by the polygraph copy at the Library of Congress. De Lacy came from Charleston, S.C. Most of Jefferson's letter concerns the possibility of stationing warships at Lynnhaven ("Lynhaven") Bay at the mouth of the Chesapeake. Image of Robert E. Lee's estate at Arlington, Virginia. Union soldiers sit on the front steps of the portico, dwarfed by the immense columns they lean on. The estate was used by Union soldiers as a hospital and later turned into Arlington National Cemetary. Captain Russell photographed in the field. (See GLC03029.03 of Arlington House). Russell's name was scratched into the negative by the sidewalk. There is some damage and discoloration on the right edge of the image.

McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. It depicts the banks of the river, rising towards small bluffs with a sparse scattering of trees. The mount has suffered some damage.

One undated photograph was taken by Andrew J. Russell. The image shows General Herman Haupt leaning against a stump and surveying the damage to artillery caissons caused by a shell. The caissons lie in wreckage next to the dead mules who had hauled them. The image is damaged on the left margin of the photo negative.
