Contains 19 articles discussing the organization and function of the Roxborough Express Horse Company, including appointment of officers and responsibilities of members. Outlines the purpose of the company: "recovering Horses stolen within our District, and detecting and prosecuting the Thieves." Contains an illustration of two men on horseback shooting at another man on horseback, presumably a horse thief, at the top of the page. A previous assessment of this document estimated the date of creation to be 1840. Has a patterned border.

Provides details on how to send the news out. Says the plan was accepted and records the names of the people on the committees that approved. Walker was also a former major general in the Confederate Army. Letter written in pencil of stationary of the Southern & Western Life & Accident Insurance Company, of which Longstreet was president.

He lists prisoners taken, captured stores, and Confederate losses. Lindsay signed as Major and Acting Assistant Inspector General, District of Louisiana. Includes a collateral biographical note written at a later date.

Responds to a letter from Madison in which he told Gerry that Parliament had abolished the Courts of Session in Middlesex. Gerry considers the news "laughable." In a long note after his signature he comments on the popularity of a certain Mrs. Derby and also notes "that our republican ladies refuse to mix with those of the high federalists of our quarter." Gerry was Madison's vice president.

President Grant transmits a copy of a treaty (not included) signed 8 May 1871 between the United States and Great Britain to Hoffman, Governor of New York. Informs Hoffman of shared American and British use of waterways, stating that "It is confidentally believed that the use of the artificial water communications which the Treaty contemplates will contribute to a rapid increase of trade ... " Desires to bring the provisions of the Treaty before the New York State Legislature, securing the use of several New York canals for Great Britain.

Lieutenant Colonel Beall reports on the British advance into Marlboro, Maryland, and the strength of the British force. Also requests money. Adds in a postscript: "It is of great importance that Col. Hood should march immediately. The Flotilla is in ashes & the men with General Winder." Letter written in the field two days before the Battle of Bladensburg, where Beall commanded. The American defeat at Bladensburg allowed British forces to enter Washington, D.C.

Indicates that she is sending two engravings of General William H. Winder to Lossing. Also suggests sources for Lossing's historical research on the War of 1812 and indicates that Mrs. Winder (Gertrude Polk Winder) is forwarding contacts to Townshend's mother. Hopes to exonerate General Winder of perceived errors in his defense of retreat from Washington, D.C., when the city was captured by the British in 1814. Lossing, an historian, published 'The American revolution and the war of 1812' in 1875. Townshend was clearly Winder's kin, but the exact relation is unclear.
