Two officers and a civilian stand on the steps of the "Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners." The officer on the right is Gen. William Hoffman. The office itself was located in Washington, D.C. at F. St. and 20th NW. The address on the building reads "148."A man and a young boy stand just inside the doorway and another man looks out the window on the right. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." The image shows the tents of the camp at Culpeper in the distance. The town is visible behind the camp. There are fenced off fields in the foreground, the closest of which is just a line of fenceposts without rails. The rails were probably removed by the army to be used in camp fires, although there were regulations against it.

A line of wagons stretches across the image engineers at the head of the teams and drivers seated in the wagons. The wagon covers bear the castle insignia of the engineers. A flag is flying on the left side of the image. Inscripton on verso: "Gardner." Stamp of Century company and the inscription "Gardner" are on verso. Numeric notations on verso: "VI"; "120"; and "523."

There is a large pile of planks in the center of the image lying next to the railroad tracks that lead to several cars on the left in the distance. A small group of men is seated on some of the planks on the left while a larger group stands to the right. Behind the tracks many men stand on a large platform that is just in front of four "Sibley" tents. The number "2019" is visible in the lower left of the image. Inscription on verso: "Manassas."

The image is a side view of the ruins of the stone bridge at Bull Run. The sides of the bridge are still standing but nothing remains of the middle span except a large pile of rubble in the water below. The man is seated on the the edge of the structure on the near bank.

Four Federal cavalrymen are sitting or leaning on posts in the foreground on the right of the image. On the left, multiple railroad tracks lead off to the horizon. There are train cars on the leftmost track which were abandoned by the Confederates upon their evacuation. The track to its right diverges to form two parallel tracks. Farther back, several men on horseback are visible near the center of the image.
