He tells Lincoln that Henry Jackson is having a difficult time advancing anything, and he asks Lincoln that he not bring any action against Jackson, "as it will have a most pernicious" [effect]. Knox says he will try to get Lincoln the money by mid-summer. Knox goes on to talk about other related matters and offers ideas about how to best deal with associates who are requesting money or who are not paying up.

Knox tells Lincoln that he has "paid on Gorhams execution 2000 Dollars, independent of the Sheriffs fees." Knox appropriated an additional $1800 to be raised and paid to Lincoln. Knox says it would not have been difficult for Lincoln's friends "to get that sum from one of the banks, renewable for the period." Knox will send the "articles engaged" as soon as the weather improves.

Writes that as he has been charged with being the commander of West Point, he must, with General George Washington, determine any changes or additions to West Point "as may tend to give it that solid strength which the nature of the service may require." Discusses some changes he would like made to the structure of the redoubts, which would require timber. Later copy. Written by Major General Knox to Secretary of War Lincoln. Congratulates Lincoln on the "glorious termination of our struggles." References Lincoln's letter of 22 February. Agrees with Lincoln on "the efficacy of the funds you mention, but I cannot determine upon the propriety of the Army pressing the particular funds upon Congress." Expects to see him in a few days as Washington will probably want to see Lincoln before the Army is disbanded. Says the magazines and arsenals cannot be erected without a special order from him.
