Includes the faint signature of [Robert E. Turner?] on the outer front cover. The first entries are recorded at Peekskill; subsequent locations include White Plains, Fishkill, and Continental Village, New York; Stamford, Connecticut; Morristown and Bound Brook, New Jersey, among others. North, possibly a Quartermaster in General George Washington's army, record amounts paid for supplies. Records the purchase of hay, horses, oxen, carts, and horseshoes, among various other items. Also records payment for services, such as for driving oxen.

Written in a flowerly, religious tone by William Thornton, the architect who designed the U.S. Capitol building who was running the U.S. Patent Office in 1805. Given to William Eaton, former American commander of naval vessels sent to the Barbary states in 1804 and 1805. Presented to Eaton after his adventures with Prince Sidi Hamet, the Sultan of Tripoli who was disposed by his younger brother Yusuf Karamanli in 1804. Eaton had proposed to help Hamet regain power, but after a series of sensational battles a diplomatic payment was made to preserve the peace and Hamet retired to Syracuse on…

Also discusses Andrew Jackson's election, de-emphasizing its importance, and comments that "the real difficulties of the Country are in another quarter," referring to slavery and the nullification crisis. Closes by quipping: "Van Buren seems to have got the start of Mr. Calhoun, but the whirligig of Time brings about its revenges."

Mentions that he is confused by the strategic moves of the British toward Philadelphia saying "this Manoeuvre of General Howes is so strange and unaccountable that it exceeds all conjecture. General Sherman congratulates General Grant on his victory at Vicksburg. Sherman warns him against the "incense of flattery" that will be created in the press. Sherman would like to celebrate, but must continue to fight. He comments on the upcoming movements of troops. He explains some strategy to work toward his goal of reclaiming the Mississippi for the Union. Written from a camp near Bear Creek.

Informs Mercer of the cost of purchases made for him in Frederick, Maryland including £29 for a slave named Kate. Says the whole of Mercer's purchase was for £2385.14.2. Has heard nothing from Colonel Payton on the Loudoun County land for which Mercer was charged.
