Ann Jackson's petition to become the property of W. C. Lewis, signed by her with an "X". The document was based on an Act of the Texas Legislature "Free persons of African descent [may] select their own master and become slaves...." With stamp of Company seal. Varian as representatives of the Democratic Electors of New York's Eleventh Ward for a side of beef, which Jackson says gives him as great if not greater pleasure than many fancier gifts. Pessenger and William P. Varian were butchers. "It has been the aim of my life to secure the happiness and thus to gain the affections of the cottagers of my country. To this end, I have toiled, and that labor might be safe in its earnings a thing impossible when the government is not under the control of the workingmen...." The notice at top notes when the address was received at the office by express, and also notes that Clay's Land Bill passed the Senate and House. There is a contemporary ink note on verso, which bleeds through to the front: "those that important."

It was from Fort Abraham Lincoln on May 17, 1876 that the fateful Yellowstone Expedition under command of General Alfred H. Terry, the Department Commander, marched out to the music of "Garry Owen" played by the band of the 7th Cavalry. Gen. Terry's headquarters were at that time at St. Paul, Minn."

Title: Burgoyne's Lamentations. [Sarcastic pro-American poem re: defeat at Saratoga]

Broadside poem printed in two columes of type; poem beginning "Good heav'ns! The poem praises Gates, Stark, Arnold and Lincoln. It is written as if Burgoyne were narrating events surrounding his defeat at Saratoga. Compare to similar copy in Kingston-Burgoyne papers, GLC 4764, "Burgoyne's Lament" printed at Boston.

Expresses his hopes that Robert Walker, the territorial governor of Kansas, would not use military force against the pro-slavery people of Lawrence, Kansas, and reflects on James Madison's wise refusal to send a military force to the Hartford Convention during the War of 1812. Insists that "One decision of a court will overturn all that [Kansas slavery advocates] could do," and cites the demise of the New Court party in Kentucky. Lewis Cass was then vice-president. McLean was a supreme court justice. Letter shows docketing in Cass's hand.
