Asks Hobart to keep him updated about his exploits with the females and advises him not let the females complain when he is leaving "as Dido did of...Eros." Instead, he should "leave them a young Hobart to play in their streets."

Mentions he has recommended Aaron to work as a clerk for Samuel Thatcher and Thatcher has agreed to pay Aaron fifty dollars per year. Also mentions possibilities for boarding. Explains how to travel by water or stage if he decides to come. Requests an immediate answer from Hobart, and if he chooses not to come, a recommendation for someone else to take the position.

Also mentions that if Elihu wants to purchase their shares, he must send $70 and the deed will be sent to French & Everetts, where Elihu can pick it up. Declines giving advice on a certain case, claiming that the "Physicians who are near you... must be better Judges...than I am."

His journey to Washington. He describes a "society" in Philadelphia which met them at the train station and furnished them with a home made meal complete with crockery and white table cloths. Indicates that the regiment was well received at every place it traveled through except Baltimore where "we had nary a cheer and I thought everybody looked as if they were sorry to see us." He spends his first night in a "wall tent". [GLC 4663, # 1 contains an excellent description of the capitol building.]

He is feeling better and expects to return to his unit in about a week. Since he does not know where they are, he will have to go to Washington to learn their location. A gang of men are putting up a large building, which Walbridge thinks may be a very large hospital. [The men may have been building the prisoner of war camp that would open on the island.] He claims it is a fine location in the summer but imagines the winter would be rather bleak.

At the Capitol in Albany. Criticizes Missouri aid societies that offer large bounties to proslavery inhabitants of Kansas. Deplores the allowance of slavery in Missouri, referring to the Missouri Compromise as liberty bargaining with slavery. Also condemns violation of the Compromise. Declares, "The right ballots could kill slavery this year. But delay a few years, and it will take bayonets to do it."
