Thompson, a Brigadier General in the Missouri State Guard, writes to General Ruggles: "Can you inform me the custom in the case of an Officer resigning who has never received his commission, but who has been duly elected and served for several months?- or in the case where a man is undoubtedly and confusedly incompetent to perform the duties devolving upon him- Such is the case of one of my Captains and he is as anxious to resign, as his men and myself are anxious that he should."

Demands one hundred men on the next day to load railway cars. The men must arrive by 8 a.m., have their own officers with them, and bring their own dinners. Year not given, but both men are referred to as Brigadier Generals. In March of 1861 neither Trimble nor Early were in the army. In March 1862 both held the rank of Brigadier General. And by March 1863 both had been promoted to the rank of Major General, meaning the letter must have been written in 1862.

Reports "I have today made a full reconnaisance of the entire front of our position extending from Colchester to Springfield- The party that attacked our pickets in the morning retired immediately after the attack owards Alexandria ... it consisted of about four hundred infantry and seventy eight cavalry; It carried off one or two loyal citizens, and some horses, among them one belonging to a poor free negro... Steedman, a hero of Chickamauga, describes the battle, which he claims as a Union victory. The Union forces suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat, but Steedman nonetheless claims a "brilliant victory" for the Union, considering the circumstances. Also says the soldiers have great confidence in General Rosecrans, their commander. The name of Gordon Granger, a Union Major General and one of the heroes of the battle, is written on the docket, perhaps a signature.
