The fifth article of the Treaty of Ghent dealt with establishing the boundary between the United States and Canada around the northwest angle of Nova Scotia and the northwestern head of the Connecticut River. Book includes copies of letters from the British agent appointed to locate the northwest angle of Nova Scotia, Ward Chipman. Verified as a true copy by S. Hales.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh articles of the Treaty of Ghent pertained to the establishment of various parts of the boundary between the United States and Canada. Van Ness was the commissioner for the section of the boundary outlined in article five and Peter B. Porter was the commissioner for the section outlined in articles six and seven. The report ends with a printed letter from Van Ness to Secretary of State John Quincy Adams regarding the execution of article five.

Submits his ideas for Holmes to make use of as he sees fit and asks they be kept confidential. Fears becoming a scapegoat. Copy of a declaration including a letter in the report of the Select Committee investigating the expenditures made in the execution of the part of the Treaty of Ghent fixing the boundary line between Maine and Canada. The letter, written by Charles Turner, was critical of the execution of the treaty (see GLC05634.03). Also resolves "That the Select Committee be discharged from further considering the said report." Addressed to Cornelius P. Van Ness in Burlington, Vermont.
