Compliments his wife saying that the last letter he received from her was the best she has ever written. He is impressed with her penmanship and her composition and wishes for her to keep practicing by writing to him. Says he is not worthy of all the praise his wife gives him in front of her friends. Notes that it will be a "great while" before he is promoted. Another one of his fellow soldiers was killed today. A small note is also included stating that 16 dollars are enclosed instead of the original 17.

The first part of the letter is addressed to his wife, Amanda. He tells his wife that he has been promoted to Sergeant. Says there was a hard fight on the river between gun boats and a rebel battery. He thinks not much damage was done to either side because the battery was on a high hill far away from the boats. He states there are many rumors about the fighting but little to be confirmed. The second part of the letter is to his mother. He thanks his mother for being kind and that he has been dreaming of coming home for a long time.

He notes that they are ready to march everyday and anxious to go out. Wilkinson does not wish to repeat the defeats of Bull Run and Lexington. Sends her a picture of himself.

Wilkinson writes that he has sent his mother 30 dollars, but has yet to hear from her. He is also glad to hear that Amanda, his wife, is out of debt. Notes that his pay has increased to 20 dollars a month but it is a poor amount compared to the work he does. He hopes that the little money he saves will buy them property and notes that some men have done so already. Asks his wife to send the rest of his family his love.

Writes that if there is a battle in which the enemy is to be defeated and give his country hope, he would not mind falling in that battle. He has received a letter from his wife's mother that his wife is sick. He is greatly saddened to hear this and hopes she gets better. Wilkinson writes that her life is more precious then his and he wishes he were sick instead of her. Says that they marched with one day's rations and their blankets along the Potomac to Pohick Church. He then writes to his mother asking her to keep him informed of his wife's condition. If she gets worse he will try to return home. Hopes that his mother and her friends will take good care of his wife.

Written from Camp Richardson. Is glad to hear that she is feeling better. Suggests that she sends someone to get her state papers for her so she can recover. Writes that his sister, Wink, is doing well and that he will write her and his mother tomorrow. Writes that they are all awaiting naval exhibitions. There was a hoax that Fort Smythe had been retaken. Says that he will not be promoted to Lieutenant but his time will come soon. Written from Camp Michigan, Virginia. Writes that he is much better then when he last wrote. The regiment has been working on building log hovels as their tents do not keep out the cold. States that they will most likely not campaign again until the spring. Thinks he will be able to return home sometimes in January, around the time his wife will give birth. Hopes that they have a boy as their first child. Writes to his mother that he knows she is doing her best to keep his wife healthy and comfortable. Explains that if he dies he would like his wife to be taken care of.

Writes that he needs his furlough signed and then he will hopefully be able to come home.

Written at Camp Michigan, Virginia. Writes that he is pleased his wife returned his letter so affectionately. Tells her that it is fine if she thinks him "foolish" for writing a love letter to her. Went to visit his friend at the hospital (he was shot in the face after Pohick Church was lost to the rebels on New Year's Day). Is unsure of the status of his furlough and unsure if he will be coming home. He says that this is also the case with many of the men and their furloughs.

Relates that Temple told him of a claim he had on lands bordering those belonging to the late Samuel Waldo, father of the addressee. Temple plans to dispute the younger Waldo's claims on the land.

Consent to slight alterations in their agreement. Signed by both Flucker and Palmer. A note on the bottom, dated 20 February, 1770, in Boston, declares that "The above continuation of our partnership is wholly settled this Day" and is signed by Palmer.
