Written by Wirt as Attorney General of the United States to Jefferson in retirement. Letter of introduction for Colonel Allen M. Lane, who was recently given a land bounty by Virginia for his services in the Revolution. Says the testimonials of his exploits in the war, as told by General George Washington, were recently before Jefferson. Says Chief Justice John Marshall's and Major Gibbon's praise make any further introduction superfluous, "since no one knows better how to value a soldier of the revolution." One bust engraving of Wirt included.

Blaine's memorandum is written in ink. The date on the piece is in pencil and is not in Blaine's hand. On the verso is a note in pencil (which appears to be in the same hand as the writer of the date) that reads: "M. L. 1158 a.m."

Written by Delaware Senator Bayard to an unknown recipient. Says as he left Kent (probably Kent County, Delaware) he saw Mr. Bobbet and communicated with him upon the subject the recipient wanted discussed. Bobbet's disposition toward the suggestion was positive. The arrangement involved Bobbet's son and Bobbet said he would accede to the arrangement while he was still his guardian for another year. Bobbet said after his son attained his majority that he would advice him to continue in the arrangement. Bayard says he will leave Wilmington in a day or two for Washington.

Adds that Captain Hunter should be sent to the Chesapeake to monitor the movement against Cuba from Baltimore. Postscript says that the proclamation is enclosed (not included). Written by Crawford as Secretary of Treasury in the Monroe Administration to Wilde, a famous scholar, poet and lawyer from Georgia. Wilde served as a Congressman 1815-1817. Crawford was writing a letter of introduction for Moses Young, one of the principal clerks in the State Department. Says he has pecuniary interests in Augusta and wishes to recommend him to Wilde's attention. Says he does not know Young, but has heard positive reports on his character.

Says agreeable to the resolves put forth by the Committee that he gave directions for Captain Davis to travel southward. Wants them to send whaling ships to Plymouth to help with its defenses. Thomas, who was eventually named a Major General, died on 2 June 1776 of Smallpox after leading his troops on the retreat from Montreal. Hard to read.

Certifies that Benjamin Burd [spelled "Bird" here] acted as a Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Battalion of Riflemen he formerly commanded (it was then commanded by Colonel Hand). Says he is still in the battalion and is deserving of a captain's commission. The co-signers all concure with the recommendation. Dated from Thompson's promotion to brigadier general 1 March 1776.
