Tolstoy critiques Herron's book, "The Christian State." He agrees with Herron's view of Christianity as a "politic and economic doctrine." He was especially struck by Herron's "denunciation of the American people for not having fulfilled its vocations." He disagrees with Herron's handling of Church and State, accusing the author of "pouring old wine into new bottles."

A partial reproduction of a statement by von Braun that originally appeared in an article contained in "This Week Magazine," included with the Charlotte Observer issue of July 18, 1965. The statement was from a interview discussing the relationship between science and religion, in which von Braun sees the two as compatible. von Braun states that the destructive forces unleashed by modern science have led people to return to religion for a means to control this awesome power. Signed and dated for inclusion with Bishop Earl Hunt's autograph collection.

Waugh deplores changes in the church (from Vatican II) that boast of "Renewal," but notes that the Church has survived harder times.

He thanks Child for the translation of George Sand.

He believes nothing in the world is an accident and sees God's will in scientific theories of the beginnings of the universe, and evolutionary improvements allowing Man to help God's plan along. He sees ultimate perfection coming in the future. Lear also comments on his notion of "spiritual currents."
