Title: Book of Accounts - Regiment of Artillery Commanded by Colo. Henry Knox 1776

Account book is written in two hands, one unknown, and the other Samuel Shaw. Relates to officers serving under Knox in the artillery in 1776. Each entry is accompanied by Shaw's notes as to whether the account was settled, adjusted, etc. Many of Shaw's notes indicate, "settled" or "adjusted in account current with Chs. Knowles." Entries relate to officers such as Thomas Foster, Edward Burbeck, Eliphelet Newell, William Perkins, Jotham Drury, Henry Burbeck, Ebenezer Stevens, Stephen Badlam, David Mason, John Crane, William Dana, etc. It is reported on the cover that all expenses in the…

Notes that Knox owed Chapman £12.12.6 for keeping 4 horses for 2 weeks and boarding Knox, Monsieur Colerus, Samuel Shaw, and a servant named John. Boarding included 140 meals. Also paid for an old pair of saddle bags. Chapman signed the document stating he received payment.

Appears to be in William Knox's hand. William Knox paid the contractor Thomas Clement £1.19.6 for boards, screws, hooks, clasps, and labor. Clement signed the bottom noting he received full payment.

Written in Knox's hand. List of expenses for the recruiting service. Goods and services include clothing, transportation, bounties, rations, medicine and pay to recruiters. Tens of thousands of dollars was allocated and spent. Page 4 has a reference to the "Indian department." Line items for the "Creek" and Cherokee" add up to $8,000 and a line item for "Indians N West Ohio" is $10,000.

Noted that Henry Knox paid Thomas Bumstead in full for work on his chaise. Total cost was £22.12.2. Payments were for chains, springs, rivets, seats, lace, buckles, a head rail, and labor for repairs. The work was done March-September 1777, but it seems that Bumstead signed the document on 16 July 1778.

Mentions that pay is current up to 31 March, although no year is given. Pay was noted as $55,000. Some other expenses include: $55,000 toward bounties, $35,000 to the Quartermaster's Department, $4,000 to the Hospital Department, and $22,000 to the Indian Department. Notes expenses for rations as well. A total of $254,550 was noted at the end of the account. Undated.

General Henry Knox's bill from Joseph Billings. It appears that Billings was a tailor. The bill is for various pieces of clothing including coats, waistcoats, and breeches. Also has payments due for various lengths of cloth as well as buttons, hooks, and thread. The total came to £86.3.3. Not signed, but appears to be in Joseph Billings' hand.
