Envelope was originally addressed to Hunt in Newport, Rhode Island. Original address is struck, and envelope is directed to the care of Mrs. Wm. A. Nichols, possibly the wife of General William A. Nichols (Clara Louisa de Russey), at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Laments the recent death of General Joseph Abel Haskin. A pencil note indicates that this letter does not appear to be written by John Gibbon.

Notes that despite reporting in London newspapers, many Englishmen are not satisfied with the politics of Lord Beaconsfield (Benjamin Disraeli, the Earl of Beaconsfield, British Prime Minister in 1868 and 1874-1880). Admits that he disagrees with some of Beaconsfield's measures, but praises the present peace. Notes that he recently assumed command of a battalion of grenadiers, and expects promotion to Major General.

Praises Rosencrantz, who served as an aide-de-camp to one of the commanders of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Notes that Rosencrantz's brevets obtained during the Civil War were not confirmed by Senate due to an act of Congress. Richards signs as First Lieutenant, 16th Infantry, Adjutant.

H. will surrender on the first demand I make and that it will probably settle the case by turning the whole business over to the Civil Court.
