Three small unmounted albumen images mounted and matted on a single board. The images were originally published as stereoviews by E. & H. T. Anthony. Anthony's titles for the images can be found in William Frassinito's "Grant and Lee: the Virginia Campaigns, 1864-1865. Shows a number of Federal soldiers [probably engineers] posed on the bridge which stretches across the river directly up the center of the image. Imprint on the verso blacked out. Group of Federal soldiers posed in clearing. Wooden buildings visible behind them. Man in white frock coat in the center operates surveying equipment, while man in front of him holds a guidon and a man behind him holds a large umbrella. Inscription etched in to the glass negative and printed onto the photograph: "Barracks of Head puarter [quarter] guard at Arlington, June 29. 1864."

Title: Tipton's Gettysburg Groups [reunion photograph of Green's 3rd Brigade, 12 Corps], Gettysburg, PA. [Late 19th-early 20th Cent. ca.]

Large group of old veterans wearing civilian clothes and ribbons posed in a wooded area [probably Culp's Hill]. A sign on the center tree reads: "Green's 3rd Brigade, 12 Corps." Part of an old recruitment [?] broadside hangs beneath the sign. A man standing center holds a 12th Corps flag. A wooden stake in the ground in front of the group has the number "100" written on it. There also appears to be a small boulder in front of the men. Tipton's imprint notes him as "The Battlefield Photographer, Gettysburg, Pa." The number "340" was scratched into the negative and printed on the image.

View from Tanneytown Road. The earth mound in front of [to the the left in the image] the house might be the graves of horses killed in the fighting. Image taken in the summer of 1863, published by the Tyson Brothers. (Tipton worked for the Tyson Brothers). This image, a blue-gray mount, was published after 1902, when Tipton moved his studio to Chambersburg Street (see address on imprint). Graphite inscription on verso: "Gen'l. Meade's Headquarters -- taken in 1863. The image is almost identical to the Tyson Brothers image of Meade's headquarters with a difference in cropping. See GLC…

Four images numbering 8494 - 8497. The images were taken from the cupola of the University of Tennessee. The images have been reduced by the photographer in different scales. Collateral note says "The right on No. 1 should join the left of No. 2, but to make them fit as they do in the original the scale of no. 1 should be increased about 1/3, or that of No. 2 should be reduced 1/4. " The images include reference to landmarks beneath the image.

Railroad bridge on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. This was the fourth bridge constructed at this spot, the previous three being destroyed by the Confederates. The broad wagon-way below the railroad trestles can be seen.
