Title from text on recto. Taken from Gardner's "Photo. Sketchbook of the Civil War," plate "No. 2." Shows a large red brick building with a white brick addition: the slave pen. A sign on the red brick building reads: "Price, Birch & Co. dealers in Slaves." The addition has bars on the windows. Negative by Wm. R. Pywell.

Former owner claims the photographer may be Tomas Roche. Taken from a slightly different angle than Gardner's famous 6 April 1865 panoramic photograph which shows the destruction of Richmond. Visible in the distance are the Spotswood Hotel [as indicated by a large banner on the outside of the building], the capitol building, and five church steeples. The foreground includes a barren hill sloping into well kept buildings, most of which are residential. Anthony's titles for the images can be found in William Frassinito's "Grant and Lee: the Virginia Campaigns, 1864-1865. Man in white frock coat in the center operates surveying equipment, while man in front of him holds a guidon and a man behind him holds a large umbrella. Inscription etched in to the glass negative and printed onto the photograph: "Barracks of Head puarter [quarter] guard at Arlington, June 29. 1864."

Title: Tipton's Gettysburg Groups [reunion photograph of Green's 3rd Brigade, 12 Corps], Gettysburg, PA. [Late 19th-early 20th Cent. ca.]

Large group of old veterans wearing civilian clothes and ribbons posed in a wooded area [probably Culp's Hill]. A sign on the center tree reads: "Green's 3rd Brigade, 12 Corps." Part of an old recruitment [?] broadside hangs beneath the sign. A man standing center holds a 12th Corps flag. A wooden stake in the ground in front of the group has the number "100" written on it. There also appears to be a small boulder in front of the men. Tipton's imprint notes him as "The Battlefield Photographer, Gettysburg, Pa." The number "340" was scratched into the negative and printed on the image.

View from Tanneytown Road. The earth mound in front of [to the the left in the image] the house might be the graves of horses killed in the fighting. Image taken in the summer of 1863, published by the Tyson Brothers. (Tipton worked for the Tyson Brothers). This image, a blue-gray mount, was published after 1902, when Tipton moved his studio to Chambersburg Street (see address on imprint). Graphite inscription on verso: "Gen'l.
