Cushing served as a U.S. congressman from Massachusetts (1835-1842) and as a delegate to the Democratic national convention, held in April 1860 at Charleston, South Carolina. Seymour had served as a U.S. congressman (1843-1844) and governor of Connecticut (1850-1853).

Dix, postmaster of the City of New York, declines an invitation from Burr, Chairman of the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee, to speak at a canvass preceding the 1860 presidential election. Dix served as a U.S. senator from New York (1845-1848), Secretary of the Treasury under James Buchanan (1861), and governor of New York (1873-1875). During the Civil War, Dix, a Union major general, helped suppress the 1863 New York City draft riots.

Written on New York Mayor's Office stationery. Labeled "private." Wood also served as a U.S. congressman from New York (1841-1842, 1863-1864, and 1867-1882). He was an outspoken Peace Democrat during the Civil War. Burr was the founder of the Hartford Times, a Connecticut newspaper.
