Title: [Proposal for organizing the artillery of the Army of the Potomac]

Lists commanding officers for corps and divisions, strength of guns, batteries, and numbers of guns. Hunt notes that this document was presented as a proposition by him to Major General Joseph Hooker, Commander of the Department and Army of the Potomac. Hunt hoped to assign two guns per 1000 men, and place the remaining artillery in reserve. Remarks that Hooker declined the proposition. Signed 11 April 1863 by Major Alexander Doull, inspector of artillery, who certifies this as a copy of the proposition presented to Hooker by Hunt. Envelope includes a note, also possibly written by Hunt.

Title: [ Written on General orders no. 14 for the purpose of diffusing instruction in artillery regiments]

Includes printed orders issued 24 August 1849 by W. G. Freeman, Assistant Adjutant General, from the Headquarters of the Army at West Point. Orders discuss organization and command of artillery regiments. These orders are followed by a note initialled and handwritten by Henry Jackson Hunt. Hunt's initialed note reads, in part: "…And then the Asst Genl detailed as he saw fit - it was from trouble giving out of a detail made by the AG for a light battery that I had charged preferred against me by him…1876-7." Hunt discusses the 18 June 1870 issuance of orders similar to general orders no. 14.

States that Fowler's company received their pay and want to send money home to their families. Fowler also wants to get a uniform. Written half in graphite, half in ink.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio regiment writes General Cox, division commander in Charleston. Reports that it is urgent that troops be sent to Princeton, West Virginia. States, "Now is the time to save men from going into the rebel army under compulsion. 1000 men can do now what will take 10,000 a week later." Battle of Princeton Courthouse took place on May 15 - May 17 1862.

Writes what horses and supplies they have for the artillery and cavalry transport. Will inform him of the road to Wytheville as they go and states of the route, "The one indicated by you is certainly the shortest, & I am told, the best." Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
