Sumner, a Senator from Massachusetts tried the previous day to locate Douglass at his office, but was too late. Writes "I beg to talk with you about the Republican party & its perils to which I fear you are not sufficiently sensible... Pray don't drive the wedge to split us. Let us try to leave the colored people in their rights..." Dated "Sunday." Not in Douglass's or Sumner's Papers and apparently unpublished.

Cosigned by Robert Alexander. Washington refers to himself in the third person seven times. Alexander wants to sell 300 acres of Maryland land his wife inherited from her father to George Washington. Washington hoped to exchange the plot with Thomas Hanson Marshall for land adjacent to Mount Vernon. The agreement was contingent upon approval by Alexander's wife, who had not reached the age of 21. John Quincy Adams explains his 1804 opposition to a bill supported by General Samuel Smith that would further protect U.S. sailors from British impressment. Refutes Smith's suggestion that Adams' position justifies British impressment. Argues that the legislation did not discriminate between U.S. and British sailors on American vessels and would strain the relationship between the two nations. Claims that the bill's passing would cause the question of war to arise immediately.

Describes Vermont's role in the quest for American independence using Samuel Williams's "The Natural and Civil History of Vermont" as a reference. Discusses the Allen family's support for American interests, the British Commissioners' proposal that Vermont become a British Colony, and a general overview of highlights pertaining to Vermont and the Revolutionary War.

Dated "Thursday." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (who had a home in Nahant) informed Sumner that false words about Douglass had been attributed to Sumner. Sumner clarifies that he stated that whatever Douglass may think of the "Presidential indignity" every one had a right to express their opinion "in as much as it concerned race."
