Title: [Delay of execution for Edward Johnson for two weeks].

Signed by Governor of Massachusetts Hancock and countersigned by Secretary of the State John Avery. Johnson was to be hanged for burglary but "humbly supplicated for further time to prepare for death." Suspension of his sentence was granted for two weeks. Paper seal attached.

Countersigned by Judge William Perkins. Sentence of Thomas Port, John Carny, John Payn and Peter Rodgers to lashings for attempted escape. Each of the prisoners plead guilty and received "thirty nine stripes on their naked backs."

Wood block of early engagement in the War of 1812 between American troops and Indians commanded by Tecumseh, near the Moravian town, 10/5/1812. Actual battle took place in 1813, so there is a error in the printed title. Print was published circa 1828.

Davis tells General Bragg that he is glad Bragg's threat of force against the Georgia State Railroad to forward arms and ammunition did not need to be carried out. Notes that the Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown, who had complained about Bragg's plan to seize the railroad, contended that he was doing all he could to help. Advises Bragg to ask for aid from the governor in the future, in fulfillment of his view that "Any conflict between Confederate and State authorities...should always be avoided if possible." Docketed by Bragg.

Walker's biography: Originally from New Hampshire, after his mother's death in 1846, Walker went to live with his uncle James W. Grimes, who was Governor of Iowa 1854-1858 and U.S. Senator from Iowa 1859-1869. Walker graduated from the naval academy in 1856 and served in the Brazilian Squadron afterwards. Title: [Call for a convention of bankers in order to effect resumption of specie payments].

Also signed by George Newbold and Cornelius W. Lawrence. This circular letter addressing the Panic of 1837, invites bankers "in the several states" to meet on 27 November in New York City "for the purpose of conferring on the time when specie payments may be resumed with safety, and on the measures necessary to effect that purpose." This copy is addressed to William Richmond, President of the Merchants Bank, Providence, Rhode Island. Signed as a member of the committee appointed by the officers of the banks of New York. At the time Gallatin was President of the National Bank of New York.

The convention had been called to respond to the Panic of 1837, and the report argues for the return to specie payments. The General Committee was led by President of the National Bank of New York Albert Gallatin. Printed in New York City by A. De Camp & Co. With original printed wrappers, stab-stitched as issued.
