Written by Major General Knox to Colonel Humphreys, an aide-de-camp to General Washington. Knox says that Captain Lieutenant Kemper has been arrested "at the instance Colonel Crane for uttering expressions to his prejudice." Says the cause of the arrest happened after Kemper received his furlough "and a special permission from head quarters, and there he is of opinion the arrest must be nugatory as in the case of Major Reid, of which he has heard." Says he cannot determine what to do, and is referring the matter to headquarters for an answer.

Says that Sergeant Barber has applied to headquarters for advice on how to handle the complaints he has made, along with various petitioners, against Lt. Col. Popkin. The peitioners claimed that Popkin improperly handled several pay notes they gave him responsibility to collect in Boston. Says that Washington wants Knox to handle the situation. Says if one or two of the petitioners need to stay in the army to deal with the complaints.

Pickering will see Hunter in a few days and settle the account. The bill was for supplies needed for the siege of Yorktown. Clerical copy in the hand of Samuel Shaw and signed by him for Knox.

Sargent had not been able to attend a meeting of officers (see GLC02437.02174 and GLC02437.02175), when they decided who would remain in the service but still wanted to continue serving, so Shaw volunteered to switch positions with him.

Writes that Colonel [possibly James] Swan will deliver six pair of white silk hose for Knox, which Jackson had ordered from overseas through a Mr. Debloise for his own use. Had ordered twelve pairs, but only kept six, "as that will be a sufficient supply for me, since I have [commenced] a soldier & shall wear boots more than shoes."
