Dug-outs and shelters used during trench warfare in Flirey, France. These dug-outs were better constructed than most were during the war. Flirey villlage was destroyed during the war. It was in No Man's land for four years before American occupation, even though the French had a hold on it for a portion of the war.

During the war, priests of the Catholic Church held services for the soldiers. Masses were often held in dug-outs in the front line trenches. It was a solemn scene because of the reality of death these men faced.

The image depicts destruction after an an airstrike. There are dead horses, destroyed train cars, and broken wagons in the background. Alincourt was a small village in France. It was occupied for a while by the Germans until the Allies launched a successful airstrike later in the war, leaving behind death and destruction.

There is some destruction in the background. The Germans left behind everything from helmets to rifles and clothing. In Soupier, France, they left behind a large sum of supplies.
