A print of a photograph of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Image looks out from the fort over the beach and water. A heavy artillery piece has been destroyed on the right hand side of the image. To the left of the carriage, against the parapet are stands of unfired grape shot. The Y shaped lines in the middle of the image were probably caused by a cracked negative. Fort Fisher was held by the Confederates until two battles with the Union, one in December of 1864 and the next the following January, when it was captured.

The cabins logs run vertically, instead of horizontally and the cabins are roofed with tents. The chimney jutting out from in back of the cabin on the right is made up of logs. In front of the entrance to the cabin on the right, a butcher holds a saw as he cuts through a slab of meat.

A group of men stand next to some buildings and the ruins of a chimney on the far right. Across the river from them is a row of tents.

A print of a photograph taken of a US Navy riverine patrol boat during the Civil War. It is a steam double-ended sidewheel gunboat of what is popularly referred to as the "Sassacus"-class. Built for patroling rivers, many were deployed to Virginia where photographer Matthew B. Brady would have had access to them. Below the image "Brady" and "Washington" are written in black ink.
