Prior to his service in the Union Army, Banks served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1856 to 1857 and Governor of Massachusetts from 1858 to 1861. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him as a major general of volunteers in January 1861. Banks suffered a poor reputation as a field commander, having faced heavy losses at the seige of Port Hudson (1863) and during the Red River campaign (1864). Vignette bust portrait of photographer David Knox. At the start of the American Civil War, Knox worked as an assistant to photographer Mathew Brady. He later began work for photographer Alexander Gardner, under whose direction he shot various elements of Union camp life and military weaponry. Some of his photographs were published in Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook of the War."

Full length standing portrait, holding cane and hat. Russell was an influential reporter for The Times of London, a British newspaper. He won international recognition following his reporting of the Crimean War from 1851-1855. During the American Civil War, Russell reported on the July 21, 1861 First Battle of Bull Run, in which an initially successful Union attack gave way to a strong Confederate counterattack and a Union retreat. Vignetted half-length standing portrait of Union general Henry Slocum, Sr. in Napoleonic pose. Clothing, hands, and parts of face heavily painted over. Water stains at the edge. Slocum led and participated in several campaigns throughout the American Civil War, including the Maryland Campaign and the Carolina Campaign. He resigned his commission on September 28, 1865 and returned to New York, where he unsuccessfully ran for New York secretary of state that year. Slocum served three terms as a Democratic Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (from 1869 to 1873 and from 1883 to 1885).
