Discusses the land deals concerning Madame de Leval and Mr. de la Roche. Defends his actions of supplying deeds to Leval and Roche by quoting directions he was given by both Knox and Duer. Quotes Duer wrote him, "General Knox who is with me has agree'd to give to Madame Leval & Mr. De La Roche deeds for that part of Trenton & No.8..." and another quote from Knox stating "I most earnestly desire you to arrange Madame Leval's situation in Trenton...quit them for it would be bad to be entangled with them in any law suits." Received Knox's letter from 5 January. Has had several conferences with the committee over contracts. Received a paper from the committee for the sale of Eastern lands yesterday, which Jackson has copied and included in this letter. The committee views the three contracts as tied to one land company and they cannot justify giving two of the contracts when the stipulations of the third "which was to have been complied with so long ago," remains to be fulfilled. Says the committee appears determined to keep their $5,000, "but I doubt not we shall [beat] them of that ground tomorrow."…

References several of Knox's letters. Has not responded because his time is fully taken up with the business of the purchase. To complete the deal he has been "eating, drinking and visiting," and will write of the particulars when everything is complete. Says everything is agreed upon and that the deeds are now being made out. They will be ready to sign by Thursday. Reports that William Bingham cannot leave Boston until that day, or possibly next week. Believes Bingham "is well satisfied with the attention paid him since his arrival." Believes that he will make a compromise with Madame Leval, as she is now with him in Philadelphia.
