Hood, whom he blames for the loss. He states that his report is late because, "most of the General officers in that Corps having been killed, wounded or captured in the recent Tennessee Campaign ..." Previously received one hundred copies of a pamphlet, sent by a Mr. Franklin. Only recently had time to revise it, and transmits his corrections. Notes that he will free frank the pamphlets, saving Mr. Franklin the trouble. The Executive Committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society at New York recently asked for permission to print an edition of a speech Adams gave the previous summer. Adams notes that since there is no copyright, "it may be reprinted by any one who may think it worth his while."

Sherman writes about the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. He discusses his experiences in it, the strategy of the battle, the officers' uniforms, and various Union generals. He explains his daring position at Shiloh, "I do not think I exposed myself at Shiloh more than was necessary from the shape of the ground and the nature of my men." He writes that he had to give orders that usually would have been left to officers of a lower rank and therefore had to be out in the open.
