Runaway slave broadside with stock wood cut of a runaway. For a slave named Lewis, "aged about 31 years, heavy set, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, inclined to be bow legged, dark complexion, and will weigh 175 or 180 pounds..." Dated from Liberty, Missouri. Lincoln states, "I will give for the apprehension of said boy...$25 if taken in Clay county, Mo., $50 if taken out of Clay and in the State, and $100 if taken out of the State."

Written from Fort Donelson, Tennessee. General Grant states that "orders ... prohibit negroes from coming into camp. When they are brought in by an officer or soldier they must be turned out ... owners are not to be permitted to search the camp on pretence of looking after their negroes. This would open the way to the most dangerous class of spies that we could have among us."

Asks Chew to send spies to watch his travels. On verso is a note dated 19 June by Chew stating that he has sent two men in the direction given by Major Andre and details what they will be paid for the service.

Provides list of expenses for the poor transient William Quirk, including room and board and "sundry articles." From docket the cost appears to be slighty over 15 pounds. Brattle says "I apprehend the charges reasonable." Note provided by the selectman says Quirk was from Newfoundland and arrived in their town under "Indigent Circumustances." Describes previous attacks, claiming that the "enemy have already burnt two hundred and twenty buildings" and "reduced from 450 to 139 capable of bearing arms." Seeks assistance immediately. Accompanied by a newspaper clipping with an excerpt from "Life of Brant" about Indian raids on Little Falls, New York in 1780.

Promotes the Union cause. Reprints an interview with Lincoln titled Mr. Lincoln's view of Democratic strategy, and a letter of General Grant dated 16 August 1864 to E.B. Washburne. Grant's letter informs that the Confederacy is very weak and losing men each day. Also printed is the verses to a song, "On the Chicago Surrender."
