Halleck writes to the Secretary of War to request that he be "releieved from further duties" as General in Chief of the Union Army because of differences of opinion between himself, Stanton, and the President. In March 1864 he was appointed (demoted) to chief of staff. Letter written on stationery of the Head-Quarters of the Army.

Halleck writes his wife a lengthy description of events that led to his appointment as General in Chief of the Union Army. He explains how he avoided quarrels between Edwin Stanton and George McClellan by refusing to mediate when asked to go to Washington, D.C. Finally, Abraham Lincoln ordered him to Washington as General in Chief. The following January, Halleck asked to be relieved from the position (see GLC01688). Part of page three is missing.

Letter written by Jackson as President, upset by the events surrounding the resignation of Major John H. Eaton as the Secretary of War. Jackson praises Eaton, as well as Martin Van Buren and Major William Berkeley Lewis for their loyalty. He attacks Vice President John C. Calhoun for what he sees as his plot to undue his administration in a "wicked depraved conspiracy," and regrets that he ever trusted Calhoun. Also attacks General Duff Green and his newspapers for being slanderous during this whole affair. The events referred to in this letter are all part of the notorious Petticoat Affair.…

Fox was a member of the Holy Name Society, Church of St. Catherine of Siena, New York, who in mid July had sent resolutions of his society to Roosevelt protesting the banishment of friars from the Philippines. Explains that his sickness, and "the possibility that I might be unable to command this army corps," makes establishing a chain of succession vital. He thanks Wood for relinquishing his claim to command to Bushrod Johnson. Hardee then commanded the 3rd Corps, Army of the Mississippi.

He informs Harris that his wife, Louisa Catherine Adams, is in charge of several financial transactions in Adams' absence.

Speer and others sign the petition, directed to Governor Geary. Petitioners argue that a group of the Territory's best citizens are unjustly held in prison. The men were arrested for resisting the establishment of a pro-slavery government in Kansas. Signed by sixty five men, including Speer. Circa date based on the term of Geary's governorship of the Kansas Territory, which lasted less than one year.
