Title: Dead Confederate soldier badly mutilated in field near Rose Woods, Gettysburg, 5 July 1863.

Image of a horribly mutilated corpse. The soldier's stomach has been ripped open and a dismembered hand lies near the body [which was probably moved into the shot from further away]. The soldier was either blown open by an artillery shell or had been nawed on by hogs that roamed the field after the battle. According to William Frassinito in "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time," Gardner placed the rifle across the soldiers leg and placed an artillery shell just above his knee. A print of a photograph showing the remains of a heavy artillery piece. The unused spherical shells scattered across the image include wooden sabots attached to the shells by tin straps. The top of the shell in the center of the image displays where the fuze would be attached. This type of smoothbore munition was commonly used by Confederate artillery.

A print of a photograph of the drum corps of the 61st New York Infantry. Thirteen drummer boys of the 61st NY Infantry posed in a field with their drums. The front row of boys are seated on their drums with the rear row is wearing their drums on harnesses. Seated on the ground in front of the officers is a small African-American boy holding a dog. A small house and a soldier holding a horse are in the background. On verso of mount is a long list of some of the images available from the publisher, taken by Mathew Brady and Alexander Garnder during the war. The mount also has a detailed printed border in red.

His jacket displays The elbow of a fourteenth man is visible on the left hand side of the photograph. The trooper sitting on the far left wears the regulation trousers with a thin blue stripe running down the outer seam.

It also identifies the location as "Petersbrug," however in the Photogrpahic History of the Civil War, Vol 2, p. 618, the scene is identified as Brandy Station. Evidence suggests Brandy Station is the correct location. Camp of A-frame tents, some with wooden doors and brick chimneys. Construction of tents suggests a winter camp. A print of a photograph of a building with the sign "Government Bakery." The bakers have come out and pose mostly in front of the bakery. Since the armies in the field baked their own bread mostly, this bakery serviced only those troops around the capital. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops and support facilities [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running.
