Asks if she is safe, if there have been any arrests, and the whereabouts of Uncle Jack. He would like also to hear from Greenwood. Claims that the army has received great news from Arkansas & the Mississippi River. The news is that Yankee General Curtis has been captured with eight thousand men and that the army's steel vessel, the "Arkansas" has attacked and destroyed a Yankee ship at Vicksburg. He predicts that New Orleans will be retaken. Describes the weather as sultry with the thermometer at 91 degrees.
