It is a "wonder that they don't die at a much faster pace." He also expresses some discontent regarding commissions, "as I have not had influence enough to make a single officer... and strangers are put in that have never seen service."

At the time he was the colonel of the eighteenth Connecticut militia regiment. He was also a lawyer. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1812 was the recipient of this letter. He would later become colonel of the regiment himself.
