States we "the drawn [William Knox] and the endorser [Henry Knox] of the beforementioned bills hold ourselves bound to Messrs Shaw & Randall for the payment of the same, together with the charges arising thereon if they should not be duly honored and paid..."

Title: Articles of agreement between H Knox and J. Hills

Indenture agreement between John Hills and Henry Knox for a survey between the Connecticut River and the Charles River. They agree that all the results shall be sent to Knox and no one else under the penalty of "one thousand dollars." The agreement also states that Knox has sent Hills "the sum of three hundred Dollars which is for the purpose of defraying the necessary expences of chain men and other necessary assistance in prosecution the said survey." Document pertains to Duer's and Knox's joint purchase of what could be up to two million acres of land near the Waldo Patent in the District of Maine from the Massachusetts Legislature (see GLC02437.04670). Legal agreement for Knox to rent the farm of Henry Gurney for three years. A man named Oliver Pollock was the previous tenant. The farm was situated north of Chestnut Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. The rent was 300 pounds of Pennsylvania currency per year. Knox is also responsible for the taxes. Document witnessed and signed by Thomas Biddle and Clement Biddle.

Henry Jackson Knox, Henry Knox's son, was charged £1.0.0 "To his Entry," £3.15.0 "To Tuition for the Summer Session," and £0.2.6 "To the School Servant." Reports that the rule of the school and college is to have the tuition paid in advance, so he has drawn on Knox for £4.17.6. Describes treaties and measures to establish peace on the western frontiers. Reports that "Accordingly offensive operations were directed, to be conducted however as consistently as possible with humanity." Hopes they can continue to talk with the Indians. Recounts a conversation he had with Morgan that day, about a letter Morgan wrote regarding an incident in the Northwest Territories. Writes that he informed Morgan he must take action and have the matter investigated, due to his office. The incident apparently pertained to General [Arthur] St. Clair, the late General [William] Butler, fighting with the Indians, and a possible Court Martial or Court of Inquiry.
