Title: [Cypher]

Appears to be Kingston's cypher to communicate with his superiors while a prisoner of war after the Battle of Saratoga. On verso are the names of the people who seem to be in on the coded messages: General Sir William Howe, General Robert Pigot, General William Phillips, and General Henry Clinton. Altogether there are 14 areas cut out, each one numbered, when placed over a coded letter of the same size will convey the true message.

Title: [Cypher]

Cypher for coded messages probably made by Kingston as a prisoner of war after the Battle of Saratoga. Has four long rectangles cut out. When placed over a letter of the same size the cut outs allow the true message to be conveyed. The name "L. Vallaniez" is written on one side. On the opposite side of the cypher the word "Bottom" is written at the bottom, as a direction of how to place the cypher over the letter. Also has the initials "G.V." written on the same side as the the word "Bottom."

Written by Musgrave as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 40th Regiment, before the loss at the Battle of Saratoga. Document records the number of troops sent over from the 8th, 9th, 47th, and 62nd Regiments. The total number of troops sent to the 40th Regiment was 45. Signed by Musgrave and countersigned by Captain Edward Foy, the Adjunct General in Canada as "A true Copy."

Title: Return of Officers of the detachment of the Royal Regt of Artillery that come under the discription of the Kings order given out by Sir Guy Carlton the 9th of May 1777

Signed by Carter as a Captain in the Royal Artillery sometime after the Battle of Freeman's Farm in the Saratoga campaign. Lists the death of Captain Thomas Jones who died in action on 19 September 1777. Says he is survived by a wife.

Written by Bouthillier, apparently as an officer in the British Army in Canada to Robert Kingston, an officer on General John Burgoyne's staff. The receipt is for cloth Kingston was having delivered to Bouthillier. Bouthillier wrote up the receipt and signed it. It was eventually initialed by Kingston.

Title: Account of Money Expended by Elijah Grout & Robt Perry On an Expedition to Connecticut River - by His Excellency General Burgoyne's Orders

Lists cash expenditures for his expedition south from Montreal, Canada. Mentions cash payments to get his expedition to St. Johns, the Connecticut River, Ticonderoga, and opposite Crown Point. Paid a Mr. Hubbard to distribute Burgoyne's declarations among local inhabitants. Other cash expenditures were for provisions. Total cost is slightly over 8 pounds, he received over 2 pounds, and is asking for a reimbursement of over 6 pounds. Countersigned by a John Peters on verso, stating Burgoyne said he should be paid.

Record of Captain Justus Sherwood for the payment of four guineas to Elijah Grout and Robert Perry for their expedition to the Connecticut River and four guineas to Jeptha Hawley for his party to go to Albany. Sherwood says he received the order to pay the money from Major Robert Kingston. Note at the bottom says the eight guineas were paid. Note on verso shows that this was money given before their respective expeditions. Jones has written Skeensbury as the place he was writing from, but it was properly known as Skenesboro, New York at the time. It is now Whitehall, New York. Says he has received his ensign pay up to 24 June 1777 and asks for two months advance on his pay. At the bottom is a note by Robert Kingston that says Jones was advanced six guineas on 14 July 1777 and another six on 30 August 1777.

Cosigned with Loiseau, who appears to be a French Canadian officer. Countersigned by General John Burgoyne on verso. Document is partially in French. Loiseau submitted an account of his expenses to Brigadier General Maclean who passed it along to Jacob Jordan, the Paymaster General in Montreal. Maclean orders Jacobs to pay the account of 92 pounds and charge it to Burgoyne. Signature on verso is Burgoyne's approval of the payment.

Petition says Captain Sherwood of a Company of the Queens Royal Rangers, was sent off with a detachment in pursuit of rebels on 6 July 1777 and left his baggage in the care of a soldier that was eventually captured. He lost five pounds sterling with the luggage. Also, on 18 July 1777 he was sent with another detachment to stop the rebels from plundering cattle from local inhabitants and when he returned his trunk was broken up and most of his personal clothes stolen, to the amount of 15 pounds sterling. Hill, a Lieutenant Colonel in the 9th Regiment of Foot, was updating Kingston, a staff officer for Lieutenant General John Burgoyne, on the allocation of funds. Says two of seven guineas were given to Boyle as a guide for the 9th Regiment and that the other 5 were also given to Boyle to compensate him for the plundering of his house, garden, and potato field. Claims the General's servant told him that he was to have two loaves of sugar and that he has only received one. Asks for another in mock desperation.
