Skipwith was the governor of the province of West Florida.

He is to send any suspects to the headquarters of the Marquis de Lafayette. Being addressed from Charlottesville is unusual.

An advertisement section includes an announcement for the sale of a young woman slave by the name of Mary Kippin.

Longstreet comments on how his decision to attack Knoxville was affected by General Braxton Bragg's retreat from Chattanooga to Dalton following the loss at Missionary Ridge. Longstreet could not, however, hold against the enemy and retreated to a position of safety near Bean Station in hopes of gaining an opportunity to stike an enemy column that might approach from Cumberland Gap. In the early part of the diary, Barnes writes of frequent drills, hearing firing, corps reviews, pickets, various correspondence (especially with his wife), and, on 9 March, playing ball. There is battle content on 6-7 February, 5-14 May (possible part of the Wilderness campaign), 20-21 May, and 27-31 May. On 1 June, he writes that he was taken prisoner. In the subsequent entries he was marched through Georgia and spent time at Libby. He occasionally writes a forlorn entry, like on 4 July: "When can I leave this place." Stanford was a Baptist preaching working in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania at the beginning of the Second Great Awakening. The diaries are dated 1) February-March 1798; 2) January-July 1799; 3) September-December 1799; 4) January-December 1800; 5) January-December 1801; 6) January-December 1807; 7) January 1812-June 1813. The diaries chiefly record Stanford's spiritual reflections and his activities as a preacher.
