Souvenir autograph copy of Grant's famous February 16, 1862, letter to Buckner demanding "unconditional surrender" of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, one of the best-known of Grant's wartime letters. This copy was written by Grant, probably in the late 1870's or early 1880's. Grant often signed copies of this letter for friends but this is only one of two copies known to be entirely in Grant's own hand. Misdated 1863. He bitterly complains about the rugged, "miserable" mountain landscape. He discusses food and illness in camp. In previous letters he wrote and comments about the supposed loyalty of the people west of the Alleghenies. Rebels hiding in bushes attacked a cavalry scouting party.

Discusses camp life, quality of troops, killing and captured rebels. His regiment has not received any mail since they came to Virginia on July 6th. He writes a description of the mountain and describes an alarm in camp. A group of "miserable Scamps" have been discharged in disgrace. [Apparently, Kelly wrote the circumstances for their disgrace in an earlier letter, not in the collection.] Continued on 7/23/1861. Scouts surprised a "Secessionist Camp" of "44 men armed & a lot of women." Thirty-four of the men were killed and Kelly expects the rest will be hanged.

Illustrated supplement to The Picayune newspaper. Describes its contents as a "faithful portrait of Billy Bowlegs, the last King of the Everglades." Explains activities in the Seminole Wars since 1835 and dubs Bowlegs a "keen, cunning and determined warrior." Illustrated with an engraving by Stevens Engraving, made from a photograph by J.H. Clark, which depicts the Seminole Indian chief holding a rifle.
