Cornell's letter referred to lead and cartridge expected to arrive from Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. Further discusses gathering ammunition from other states, noting "the demands from the southward and westward so great as to claim the utmost economy..." Notes that General Duportail applied to the Quartermaster General for [artillery gun] platforms. Knox's retained draft.

Humphreys, an aide-de-camp for George Washington, informs Knox that Washington "thinks in the present state of our Ammunition not more than 15,000 of the Cartridges at Succasanna can be spared to the State of New Jersey..." Asks Knox to issue the order pertaining to the cartridges. Relates that Washington will also inform [William] Livingston, Governor of New Jersey, of the same. In a post script, instructs Knox to send the order in favor of Elias Woodruff.

Assures Knox the Board will do everything in their power to facilitate the measures of George Washington.

Title: [History and provenance of the Jeffery family seal]

A note that once accompanied the Jeffery family seal containing the history and provenance of the seal. Includes short anectdote about a Mr. Jeffery who was captured in the War of 1812 while wearing the family seal. The British officer in command, who also was named Jeffery, recognized the seal as his own and granted the former his freedom. The seal is housed separately from the note.

First nine pages contain letters to and from Archer (1856/5/19-1857/9/19). Log entries begin on 19 May 1856 and include his voyage aboard the U.S.S. Roanoke (1857/4/17 - 1857/9/16) and his cruise to the East Indies aboard the U.S.S. Powhatan (1857/12/7 - 1858/12/15). A list of letters written and received appears toward the end of the book. Burgundy leather spine; tan, blue and red dotted boards. The Opium Wars took place 1839-1842 and 1856-1860, both ending with treaties that opened certain Chinese ports to foreign trade.
