This document contains two letters written by David Scott Knapp. In his first letter, Knapp, a sailor on a privateer on blockade duty, writes to his father and mother, describing chasing a blockade runner which escaped them. Knapp's second letter is dated August 10, 1864, and is addressed to only his father. In his letter, Knapp primarily discusses family matters and asks his father to write him longer letters. This letter is accompanied by an envelope postmarked August 12.

Wells attests that he received $384.32 for his service as Major of the 15th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry. States that he was paid by army paymaster S. T. Safford. Includes a description of two of Wells's servants, John and Tim, who are listed as having a "Cold," or "colored," complexion. Rations were due to Wells in Sir Johns Run, present-day West Virginia.

Patriotically declares "I do not know or care particularly where we go all I want Is to do my duty In whatever place they may send us ... " States that General John James Peck is present in camp. Instructs his parents to send correspondence to Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Each verse describes missing loved ones and the patriotic duty of serving in the war. Possibly printed as a broadside.
