Ink wash drawing of the eagle medal L'Enfant proposed for the society. In his letter to Baron von Steuben at the founding convention, he described two medals and recommended the one drawn here (see GLC04379.23). The actual medal issued resembles this drawing, but has some differences. On the real medal, the wreath extends above the head, there is an inscription along the perimeter of the emblem on the eagle's breast, and the feet holding the branches are visible. Title: Argument of Hon. Edwards Pierrepont to the jury, on the trial of John H. Surratt for the murder of president Lincoln

Printed at the Government Printing Office. Pierrepont was chosen to prosecute John Surratt. Presents detailed evidence against Surratt, including excerpts of testimony from various witnesses such as Mary Branson. Also includes various letters inlvolving other conspirators to further support his case. Surratt, unlike the other conspirators, was tried in a civilian court, not a military court. The trial ended with a hung jury on August 10, 1867. The federal government eventually dropped all charges against Surratt and released him from custody in the summer of 1868.

Title: Opening argument of Mr. Butler, of Massachusetts, one of the managers on the impeachment of the president

Address given before the Senate. Accuses President Andrew Johnson of undermining Congress authority, vetoing laws that promoted peaceful reconstruction of the nation, and not punishing rebels. A resolution for Johnson's impeachment was passed in the House of Representatives February 24, 1868. On March 5, 1868 a court of impeachment was organized in the United States Senate to hear charges against the President. After three months, Johnson was acquitted and retired at the end of his term, in March 1869.

Most entries detail the weather, the regiment's movements through Virginia, foraging, rations, and daily occurrences. Entry on 3 May mentions that the cavalry captured 12 Confederates and surrounded and fired at a major who had escaped into the woods. Entries for 14 and 15 May describe an engagement near New Market, Virginia where his regiment suffered losses because they were outnumbered.
