Newspaper clipping

Title: [Twenty two newspaper clippings collected by Eleazer L. Sarsons]

Mostly printed photos and obituaries of New Hampshire Civil War Veterans. Some material related to ex-prisoners of war; Sarsons had been a POW and spent time at Andersonville. There is also an article on Thomas Carter, who had been awarded the medal of honor. The newspaper names and dates do not appear.

Title: Camp Sullivan. Headquarters of the fourth New Hampsire Regiment, general order No. 1.

Organizes the regiment, listing the officers, their positions and companies, and the arrangement of the regiment. Authorized by the command of Colonel Whipple and witnessed by Adjutant Henry W. Fuller. Eleazer L. Sarsons, the owner of the document, was listed as 3rd Sergeant in Company C. Made at Camp Sullivan.

Discusses an attempted robbery at a friend's house, but says the "most wicked & fearful part" of the riots "was the ill treatment of the poor colored people, several of whom were murdered by hanging & other means." Written to his son.

Confusion over whether Jackson recieved funds from the Quarter Master General in excess of what he was owed. Jackson believes he was due all funds he recieved, and that if he has recieved too much, it must be due to a misunderstanding. "It has allways been my desire, never to receive any money on account of the U States, unless where I was well warranted by cause, and such as others of equal grade in the army had been in the habit of receiving." Written to Calhoun, who would later become Jackson's Vice President and political adversary, as Secretary of War.

Boys, aliens, federalists & negroes." At the time both Van Buren and Miller were heavily involved in New York Democratic Politics.

Burr denies having any of the money owed to McLachlan's son, Philip Garniss. Says Mr. Gardiner has $2,600 for the her son and that he is trying to help secure for the boy. Says if she tries to take it, the money will be returned to Mr. Gardiner, and assures her the money will be safe. "I take the liberty Madam, to advise you not to speak in improper or offensive terms of Mr. Plant or any of your neighbours - remember you once lost an estate by the unguarded use of your tongue."

Grant suggest that if George Thomas will not attack Nashville, he may have to be replaced in command by John Schoefield. "You probably saw my order to Thomas to attack: If he does not do it promptly I want to recommend superceeding him by Schofield." Grant also suggests a separate promotion for Frederick Steele. Grant had been urging Thomas to attack Nashville for some time, and on December 6th had finally sent a direct order for Thomas to attack. On December 9th Thomas had still not moved, and Grant ordered him removed from command. However, the order is suspended by Grant's superiors…

Reports enemy's movement should be difficult because the "country was overflowed from the river, & the swamps so full as to be of very difficult passage." Less than two weeks later the Confederates at Lawtonville would be defeated in the Battle of Rivers' Bridge.

One of the "Coffin Broadsides" that attacked General Jackson before the 1828 election. Accuses General Jackson of heartlessly executing six innocent militia men, and depicts their coffins. Also slanders Jackson in various ways and accuses him of other crimes. Frame is 69 x 49 cm.
