Secretary of War Stanton writes to his friend Reverend Dyer about Union strategy in Peninsula Campaign, responding to criticism in the press. He expresses condemnation of General McClellan. Stanton insists that Lincoln agrees with him concerning the defense of Washington. He also expresses his thoughts about his position: "I knew that everything I cherish and hold dear would be sacrificed by accepting this office. But I thought I might help to save the country and for that I am willing to perish." Written on four folios.

Cannot persuade General George Gordon Meade to collect his account. Discusses matters pertaining to the military and War Department.

Name of city is illegible. Possibly created by Robert Hughes Fitzhugh, who served in the First New York Light Artillery during the Civil War. Mentions an enclosed letter transmitted by his brother in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from a Congressional member from that district (possibly James Herron Hopkins). Asks Hunt to notify him when Hunt's bill is brought before the House of Representatives. As a postscript, notes "I protest against Mr. Hopkins calling an act of justice relief."

Gardiner, a Civil War veteran from New York, relates that he was recently in Louisville, Kentucky, where a young man was pretending to be Hunt's son. Inquires as to the legitimacy of the young man's claims. Marked "Private" at the top of page one. Mentions General Sloan, Medical Director of the Department of the South. Gardiner published several works on military topics. After the war, Gardiner served as Secretary-General of the Society of the Cincinnati and District Attorney of New York County.

Gardiner, a Civil War veteran from New York, relates that he recently visited West Point. Discusses the false claims of a young man in Louisville, Kentucky, who is posing as Hunt's son. The young man had introduced himself to some of Hunt's acquaintances there, including General Sloan, Medical Director of the Department of the South. Of the incident, remarks "It is a rich drama- and I am only sorry that a distance of a thousand miles- prevents the tow of your boot giving a finale to the reverse of the medal of the young scamp."

Flour $10 per bbl for family. Potatoes $1.00 to $1.25 per bus. I don't know what the poor people will do if this continues."
