Title: to George Poindexter

Writes to Governor of Mississippi Poindexter to introduce Rev. Austin Dickinson. In 1819 Dickinson was delegated by the Synod of Tennessee to raise funds to build a theological seminary in Tennessee; he is sure that Poindexter both will give Dickinson aid and will inform him of the best means of promoting support from "the citizens of the state" over which he presides. Jackson became Governor of the Florida Territory in 1821. He was President of the United States from 1829 to 1837.

Singed by Toby with an X, also signed by Samuel Swift and Thomas Hazard, both Justices of the Peace. States that "Hannah Toby Indian Woman" has indentured her son "Javin Toby a Molatto" to John Steadman and his wife for fifteen years and five months. The terms of the indenture specify that "He shall not use any unlawfull games, nor Contract Matrimony nor Commit Fornication during sd Term." He must faithfuly obey them, and they must provide food and clothing.

Title: [Legal documents relating to the arrest of Ruth, an Indian Woman]

Two documents with legal dockets on verso. The two documents relate to the arrest of an Indian woman named Ruth, with a deposition against Ruth, an order for her arrest, a record of her arrest, and the facts of confession. The deposition is from Ephriam Kingsberry, who claims Ruth stole a pair of woman's shoes from his house. The arrest order was issued by Isaac Huntington, the Justice of the Peace. The record of the arrest is from constable Joseph Tracy. In the last document Ruth confesses to the crime, and is sentenced to work for Kingsberry for ten weeks.

Title: [Deposition of Clark concerning the murder of two Indians, signed with his mark]

Clark signed with his mark "J." Clark was servant to Ebenezer Hall at Montinicus Island and saw Hall and his son shoot two Indians in the Summer in 1751 and bury them in his garden. The deposition says "The Examinant afterwards saw Hall cut the Indians Canoe in Peices [sic] and burn it, saying, Now we have killed the Devils, we shall burn their damn'd Canoe; The Indians Cloaths were buried with their Bodies, Their Guns Hall put into his Chest, & afterwards carried them to Small Point. About a Week after the Indians were killed, Hall & his Son said that they would go to Virginia."…

Informs Governor Bernard that Asten is "the person suspected by the Indians," for being responsible for "the Murder and Robbery of some of their Brethren." Asten was believed to be robbing the Indians of furs. Numerous people, including Indians, saw Asten with wampum and articles of Indian clothing which "appears too suspicious to pass Unnoticed." In other documents Asten's name is spelled Austin.

One letter from Aaron D. Stevens to Anne Brown Adams dated January 5, 1860. Awaiting his upcoming trial and execution, and recalls the deaths of John Brown and other Harpers Ferry raiders. Says "The boys met their fate very cheerful." Was badly wounded in the jaw. Written from the Charlestown Jail. Says he is sharing a cell with Harrison, the name that Albert Hazlett had assumed. Likely copied in Anne Brown Adams' hand.

Likely copied in Anne Brown Adams' hand. Written to one of John Brown's sons as well, addressed simply to "My Dear Brother." Portion of the letter written to the son states Stevens is awaiting execution, ready to die, and looking forward to the next life. He writes, "Some of us must suffer that the rest may learn." Says he did not see John Brown write anything before his death, but was not with him at the very end. Part written to Anne has the same content as GLC03007.01, except that the end of the letter has been lost. Written from Charlestown Jail.
