A letter from E P Hatch about a reported conversation between Senator Bruce and President Hayes in which Bruce was reported saying "that he was not, and had not been, the friend of the colored people, and that he could pursue his course and that you would pursue yours." Hatch is asking Bruce if this is true, as well as what his views actually are so that as Bruce's friend if asked he knows. A letter from a man named Jack that details the events in Bolivar County, and the officials there. This letter mentions "Old Matt" leaving the sheriff County's office and Ousley taking his place. It also mentions that it is unlikely the author will be joining the party in the county. The letter is ripped along a fold line, and the page is folded in the upper left hand corner.

Livingston starts by writing about the fact that a group of people have taken bricks from Senator Bruce's land, as well as some trees. He also notes that taxes, both personal and land are coming due soon and that he will include the amounts owed. Livingston also asks what Pinchback's chances are of admitted to the Senate. At the end of the letter Livingston lists the Senators taxes and asks him to contact him if the senator has different numbers.

The first is a box that was forwarded to the senator, which was sent express, and if he did not receive it he should inquire to its location. The second point was that Livingston has secured a lady to live at the house, a Mrs. Richardson whose husband works at the jail as a guard. The third point was a levee bond held by James Hill that Hill sent along with 500 dollars. So the docket might have been written on a part of an old letter.

He asks that he be allowed to rent the farm at 75 dollars per year, and he will make a payment to purchase the house as soon as he can.
