There are six men total in the image. Five are posed, two sitting, three standing, while the sixth appears to be exiting the tent with a cup in his hand. The man in the center strikes a Napoleonic pose. Inscription on verso: "Gen. Ward Gen. Mott Col. Austin Col. Brewster Col. Farnham 2nd division 3d corps. Oct 1863. 280 pages 10 cat." Title: Confederate dead on Rose Farm, Gettysburg, Pa. [July 5, 1863]

Inscription on image: "After first [inserted: day of] battle at Gettysburg." Photographer's labels were often incorrect [sometimes intentionally], and this is such a case. The image is actually of Confederate dead on the Rose farm, which was the scene of fighting on July 2. The photo was actually taken by Gardner on July 5, according to Frassanito in "Getysburg: Journey In Time" [p. 209]. The corpses have been collected by Federal burial parties. Gardner's darkroom wagon is visible on the left side of the image. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's (keeper of Lincoln's tomb) scrapbook.

Image shows a large gathering (5111.01.0621-623 suggests about 5,000 people) in the courthouse square assembled to show their indignation at Lincoln's assassination. The crowd, mostly men, fills the square. There is a line of men sitting on a fence in the foreground behind which are many horses and carriages. The word "office" is visible on the building on the left. There is a small canopy over part of the group which may have been where the speakers stood. See GLC 5111.01.0619
