Writes, "The bearer hereof has in charge one William Campbell, who came to camp as a recruit for the Mass Line. He offered to enlist with the recruiting party [for] this State but was refused by Captain [Andrew] Moodie who has [reported] him to me. As I cannot learn that he is appropriated to any particular service, I send him to you, as Head of the Line for which he was recruited." Written and signed in the hand of Samuel Shaw.

Written by William Hawes, a Captain of Artificers. Mentions that he called on Knox while in Philadelphia, but Knox had already proceeded on to West Point. Reports that the Minister of War [Benjamin Lincoln] has ordered thirty artificers to continue working at Springfield, and has given Hawes directions for them. As part of his instructions, he is to bring Knox any articles he needs. Reports on the progress of the construction of the magazine, as well as the use of leather for harnesses and pouches.

Written by Harrod to Major General Knox. Is writing because he knew Knox had a friendship with his deceased "Brother Treat" (possibly Samuel Treat, d. 1777, Harrod's brother-in-law).. Is requesting his assistance in getting Treat's half-pay pension for his mother, who needs it. Also says that "the last time he was at Haverhill I think he told me he lost a Valluable Horse at the [battle of] Brandy Wine & did not know wheather it would be made up to him." Says his petitions have not been answered and hopes Knox can assist him.

Discusses continued arrangements for invalids and refugees, hospital staff, and stores.

Written from Fort Pitt, the location of present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Discusses his arrival at the fort the month before, and describes which officers and companies are there, or are on their way. Includes returns of personnel and stores, and complains that the stores have not been well-maintained. Also indicates the high rate of desertion from the fort. Provides intelligence he has received from a Moravian Indian called "John Bull" (who is called "Sheebo" by other Indians), which consists of the movements of local Indian groups (including Moravian, Chippewa and Ottowa Indians)…

Thanks Knox for his attention to his son-in-law Mr. John Inman (see GLC02437.03287) and for "delivering [him] from Prison & perhaps Death." Inman arrived last night and was escorted home by General [John] Crane, and is "now under the care of an able Physician god grant he may be returned to his right mind." Is aware that Inman made a "very great sacrifice of property" in his New York business, and will see to it that "strict justice" be granted to Inman's creditors, who had him confined for debt and then allowed for his liberation. Will see to it that they receive the money owed them.

Asks for Hamilton's help if he is traveling to Albany. Is a purchaser, with Hamilton and others, of lands around the St. Lawrence River, the patents for which lands have been taken out of the Land Office in the name of Alexander Macomb. Aside from lands purchased by the state, certain portions of the land picked by a group led by General [Philip] Schuyler were to be paid for by Knox and several others. Would like Hamilton to determine how much Knox needs to pay and to whom he should direct the payment.
