Informs Weedon that there is a ship with 20 soldiers and artillery stores caught on a shoal in the Wicomico River. Discusses how to get the stores off the ship and suggests he may want to "continue this" with Genl Washington. The Continental Army was then preparing for the siege of Yorktown. Lieutenant Colonel Gaskins commanded a Virginia line in the Continental Army.

Refers to a letter received from Captain James Freeman asking for information about how Freeman might settle his military salary account with Congress (see GLC02437.01310). Knox encloses the resolve of Congress which describes the requirements for getting an account settled, as well as a certificate from Joseph Carleton, Secretary to the War Office, which states that certain parties had their accounts settled by a scale of depreciation better than the one used in Congress's resolve.

Refers to his last letter from December asking Knox for help in getting a pay settlement (see GLC02437.01310). He has not received an answer, so he supposes the letter has not been delivered to Knox. Believes that Knox would reply with his help if he had received the letter, out of a sense of "humanity," and believes Knox to be a "lover of Justice." Adds, "When I tell you that my Friends are in very Indigent circumstances, you will naturally suppose, that, I am destitute of money, and so poorly clad, that I cannot appear with common decency abroad."

Clerical copy of GLC02437.03231, written in the hand of Samuel Shaw with clerical signatures of Knox and Samuel Ogden, both in Shaw's hand. Note written regarding Samuel Shaw, who is the "defendant in an action brought against him by Mr. John Holber, in Philadelphia." Requests that Mr. Fullerton take over Shaw's bail from Mr. Robert Morris, with the guarantee that the money will be repaid by Ogden and Knox to Fullerton and anyone who helps Fullerton acquire the money.

Explains that at the beginning of the war, Knox applied to the Provincial Congress in Massachusetts to exchange furniture with Gardiner's Loyalist aunt and uncle Barnes, Knox's furniture being in Boston. Due to poor communication, the Barneses did not know that this exchange was happening until they arrived in England. They were upset because they had to lay out substantial sums for the move, and apparently could have used money from the furniture (either their set or Knox's). Writes in full, " I have the honor to acknowledge the weight of your Excellencys application respecting Monsieur de Varonault of the French Navy to be admitted with the society of the Cincinnati which I submitted to the Society. I am directed by the society to inform your Excellency that it will be necessary that Monsieur de Varonault address himself to the society in France agreeable to the [illegible] provided by the Genl Society."

Discusses a court case in which Samuel Shaw is defending himself against a Mr. Holker. Reports that the jury has been dismissed, having been unable to agree on a verdict. After polling the jury, Fullerton has found that eight of the jury members were in favor of awarding Mr. Holker $2300 with interest, and the other four were in favor of awarding Mr. Holker double that amount. Believes that Mr. Shaw does not stand a good chance of winning when a new trial is called, though Shaw's lawyers are still optimistic. Suggests it might be beneficial to remove it directly to the Supreme Court.…

Fears imprisonment and the loss of his property. Declares, "during the War I supported two good men in the Army & from 1777 to 1787 I paid upwards of five Thousand pounds dry Tax. besides allmost constant subscription money for six weeks & three months men..."
