Title: [Penobscot Expedition: Approval of request to retrieve Americans in enemy territory]

Written by an unknown commander during the Revolutionary War giving permission to Thomas Nutting and Charles Hutchings to raise a party to "fetch off the families of the friends of America" at "Majabagaduce" (now Castine, Maine). They are given permission to raise a party of men not already in the service and to take prisoners; they are not to commit any "inhuman action" along the way. Townsend is now Boothbay Harbor. Verso of document has a waxy backing, which appears to have been added to provide stability to the paper.

Title: Receipt to John Chanioard

Captain Barnard, a commander of a company of Continental soldiers, wrote that he received 120 pounds from Captain Edward Ellis of Middletown to pay soldiers recently enlisted in the Continental Army. Barnard says he is in Samuel Wyllys's regiment. A separate sheet (17.2 x 22.4 cm.) that appears to have been used as an envelope is also included. Miscellaneous figures are added up on both sides of the sheet. Docket on the sheet says he received 120 pounds from Barnard on 29 March 1780.

Letter written by Trumbull as Governor of Connecticut to Williams as Commissary of Prisoners at Hartford. Asks Williams to follow through on the request of Elias Boudinot, the congressionally appointed Commissary General of Prisoners, for information. Tells Williams to pass along a list of prisoners and expenses to Boudinot's assistant, Mr. Messerau, when he arrives from Boston. Says Boudinot has written "several" times for this information and that Williams needs to move so prisoner exchanges and reimbursements can be facilitated.

This Legal document gives Oliver's power of attorney to Bowlby, an attorney in Philadelphia. Oliver was previously in an artillery unit in Pennsylvania and had left North America and joined an artillery unit based out of Nottingham, England. Oliver was giving Bowlby the complete power to transact his business in America, including the distribution of certain lands for service in North America during the Revolution. Title: [Resolution of the Connecticut Assembly to pay Amos Mead]

States that Mead advanced Lieutenant James Hughes two hundred dollars Continental currency to raise a company for the defense of Greenwich. The next year Hughes defected to the enemy, leaving Mead with only a promissory receipt. The assembly resolves to pay Mead seven pounds ten schillings out of the treasury to cover this expense. Mead signs acknowledging receipt of the money. Written at "A General Assembly of the State of Connecticut."

There are multiple spellings for the Hungarian creator of this document. Signs this letter "Michael de Kowatz," but is also known as Michael Kovats de Fabricy or simply Michael Kovats. He was a Colonel in the Continental Calvary and was killed on May 11, 1779 defending Charleston, South Carolina. Letter written to Brigadier General Hand. Seems to be writing about an attack that was defended, but this is a quick translation. In postscript mentions a man named David Lewy, who seems to have delivered the letter. Kovats is celebrated as a Hungarian patriot for his service and sacrifice in the war.

Letter written by Captain Lieutenant Belneavis to Lieutenant General Cunningham before both men were to depart for the West Indies. Says before he is to join the 45th Regiment of Foot, which is under Cunningham's command, he conceives it his duty to mention a few particulars of his service in order to promote a possible promotion. Said he went to America in 1776 and joined the 71st Regiment of Foot and fought in all their campaigns, both North and South. Title: View of the Attack on Bunker's Hill with the Burning of Charles Town, June 17, 1775

Marked that it is engraved by Lodge, but drawn by a Mr. Millar. Engraved for Edward Barnard's book "New Complete & Authentic History of England," which was published in 1783. Shows the bombardment, from both land and sea, of Charles Town. The town was bombarded after house-to-house fighting failed to dislodge the American militia. Officers asked that hot shot be fired at the town, which was done from ships and from Copp's Hill in Boston. The engraving shows the subsequent conflagration. Pursuant to a warrant from Colonel George Leonard, on behalf of Governor "Shierly," Knap is to appear at Captain Leonard's dwelling in Raynham on the morning of 20 June, completely outfitted for military service and prepared "to proceed on his Majesty's service for the defense and protection of his Majesty's subjects in the frontiers of this province." Written as Captain of the Military Company in Raynham. On verso is the signed statement of Elijah Leonard that he did meet with Knap on the day indicated and gave him the warning.

New York Governor Clinton writes to Major Collins to inform him that he disapproves of an enlistment scheme in Albany and has written "to Capt Marshall to put a stop to it, & discharge those Inlisted." Concludes: "I am surprizes that the Colonels shou'd suffer their Men to depart without proper Arms & Accoutrements, and I think that Colo Schuyler is in the right to provide them with what is necessary. A note by Clinton on the verso mentions a commission for Collins and the regulation of pay. Another note by Collins asks for blankets and guns.

The sheriff of Essex is ordered to seize the goods or estate of Nathaniel Smith and, if Smith can be found, to arrest and bind him over for trial on the last Tuesday in December. Smith is charged with nonpayment of two debts incurred by him with William Colman of Ipswich. The sheriff is not named. Verso contains an unsigned note in another hand (also dated 13 December) that neither Smith, nor any property belonging to him, could be found. Docket contains the name of Attorney at Law John Hart. Saltonstall, commander of a regiment during the French War, provides Shepherd the names of the officers who have been appointed to serve with him. He is ordered to make weekly returns to Major Salah Barnard of the number of men that he and his officers enlist. Details the form of the company's uniforms, and tells him the name and location of the tailor who will prepare these. Further orders will come from Major Barnard.
