Written by Mason, who, per docketing, appears to be the reverend for the garrison at West Point, to Major General Knox. Asks for an extension of his leave until next month as his wife is still very ill and his family's interests "are so embarrassed, that I am involved in a variety of difficulties." Says the garrison is on his mind daily, but says this indulgence by Knox will allow him to return before winter and counsel the men of the garrison "with a composed mind." Written at the bottom of the letter, in what appears to be Samuel Shaw's hand: "(granted) answered by SS."

Declares he has received a letter from his sister "informing me that my Fathers Estate is unsettled. I will suffer a material Loss, unless I immediately attend to that business." Writes that in response to his request, he has not heard that any sick members of the garrison are suffering "for want of a Gentleman of the hospital." Writes that he does not feel it would be proper to grant him permission to travel to New Jersey on family business, perhaps because Dr. McKnight's services are needed at Fishkill: "If it really was with me to grant you the permission and the State of the service would permit it, I certainly should convey it to you without hesitation." Written by Major General Knox to General McDougall, who was part of a committee sent to Congress by the army to lobby for half-pay pensions. Says he previously wrote "of the ferment which was raised in the minds of the officers by some anonymous pieces circulated through camp." Says that the meeting called for in the circular was held yesterday and that he will get a report on it from General Gates. Asks him to continue his mission in Philadelphia. Thinks the sentiments of the army "will do them honor."

Knox informs General McDougall of the death of Doctor [Hagan], who worked at the West Point hospital. Hagan was entitled to join the Society of the Cincinnati, and left behind a wife and young son, who are unable to afford "subsistence or protection." Reports that the boy is at Albany, New York. Writes "I shall make no apology for this communication being convinced that you will think it a case in point in which the society ought to interest itself." Knox was alerted of the situation by Doctor David Townsend, a friend of the family of the deceased.

Signed in text by Knox. Regrets that the Reverend Doctor Mason's letter was not attended to sooner and states that he asked a gentleman to reply to it but it must have been omitted. Believes Doctor Mason's idea of providing an early military education is "a solid one" and "the nation which would adopt it would long experience its beneficial effects." But has doubts whether the people of the United States would accept it. Thanks Mason for his letter (see GLC02437.04483).
